The wind was stronger than anything I’d ever experienced. When I asked if it was typical, I got coy shrugs and half-smiles.
‘Well, there aren’t many trees around here, so…’
That night, a fierce storm came riding in on the wind. I sat near the entrance of the hotel, eating a paltry meal with my colleague and watching the snow whip almost horizontally through the yellow swath of light from the street lamp.
“When we’re done, I’m going out there to take a quick video,” I told her. She laughed and shook her head.
A few minutes later, the lights flickered. Once, twice…and then a darkness that lasted through the night.
The next morning, the sun danced on the snow and the ice that coated the world. It clung, and it sparkled.
The only camera I’d brought with me was the one built into my iPhone, but I used it anyway – I really just couldn’t resist.
